Flavour of the Week
Issue #33
Welcome to Issue #33
Back to regular TV and food content this week, alongside some garden and allotment renovations.
Television
Sexify, Season 2
Synopsis: Following the success of their woman-focused sex app in Season 1, three female friends branch out and create a version for men.
Likes: It’s a quirky dramatic comedy. Every scene of every episode is punctuated with unusual sound effects and a pumping sound track to accentuate whatever we see on screen. The three leads are interesting, fleshed out characters with their own backstories.
Dislikes: There isn’t much of a plot and it meanders all over the place until we get to the big finale.
Rating: 6/10
His Dark Materials, Season 1
Synopsis: Based on the Philip Pullman book series of the same name, His Dark Materials is set in a multiverse reality, beginning in a world where all human souls manifest as animal companions called daemons. We follow 13-year-old Lyra Belacqua, an orphan living with scholars in Oxford who unbeknownst to her is the subject of a prophecy that claims she will change the world.
Likes: It looks fantastic. Lovely use of special effects for the daemons and various creatures Lyra encounters along the way. It’s real edge-of-your-seat action at various points, with a shout out in particular to Episode 6.
Dislikes: It is a young adult drama and so can sometimes feel a bit like you’re watching any episode of BBC’s Doctor Who. That’s not a terrible thing, but it’s all a bit safe. I didn’t race through this compared to some other series which really hook me in and thought I’d give up after I finished, but it ended well and I’m curious to see Season 2 now.
Rating: 7/10
Food
We recently learned that our local town Brackley has a monthly Bite Club. Local street food vendors gather and sell food for an evening at a village hall and they put on a bar and live music. We popped in to see what was on offer; I tried ‘The Steak One’ from Wilsons and my partner had the a chicken tandoori naan from Hyde Dhaba.
The steak burger was disappointing. My main gripe was the bun was overly toasted so it had zero fluffiness. The steak was nicely cooked but compared to the photo on their menu, it seemed small and had a minimal number of straw potatoes leaving me hungry and regretting my choice. The tandoori naan was much better. It was a decent sized portion and I tried a few bites and it was very tasty, fresh and vibrant.

We visited The Folly back in March to try their Sunday roast. It was my mum’s birthday this week and so I took her here to try lunch on a Saturday.
My parents both had steak and eggs from the lunch menu whilst my partner had the vegetarian lasagne and I went for the rack of lamb from the a la carte menu. Everyone enjoyed their food and my meal was excellent. The little pot you can see in the photo was full of aubergine and goat’s cheese rolls which I never would have thought to put with lamb, but it worked very well and was delicious.
We had a couple of sundaes for dessert but unfortunately they were already being demolished before I thought to take a photo.

It’s been a good 6 months since I’ve spent any time tending to the garden or allotment. I failed to prune any of the garden plants after they finished flowering last year and have allowed the weeds to run riot throughout.
This week a friend offered to come and help on my allotment plot and the first thing we needed to do was clear the two beds. A couple of hours of digging and turning the soil and it was transformed, (almost) ready to plant any successful seedlings which were sown indoors a few weeks ago.

After
The garden was worse if anything. I failed to take a before photo but the patch of soil pictured below was barely visible due to the grass and weeds which had grown over. I dug them all out and have planted a fern and hydrangea which I’m hoping will do well in what is a shaded spot.

I’ve spent the last couple of days working my way across other areas of the garden, weeding and pruning as I go. It’s amazing how much of a transformation there is. I’ll take more photos in the coming weeks (assuming I have the time to keep going with it!)
