Flavour of the Week

Issue #31

Welcome to Issue #31

Testing a new format this week with three quick film reviews.

Film

Bros

Synopsis: Romantic comedy starring Billy Eichner as Bobby, a gay man looking for love in Manhattan.

Likes: Interesting to see a non-heteronormative take on a rom-com. Just about enough laughs and a couple of good shocks.

Dislikes: For a film which prides itself on breaking new grounds, it's ultimately a formulaic rom-com. Scenes with Bobby and his co-workers are edited to within an inch of their life.

Rating: 5.5/10

Coda

Synopsis: Coming-of-age drama about a teenage girl who happens to be the only hearing member of her otherwise deaf family. As an aspiring singer, she must balance pursuing her dreams with her family's dependency on her support for their fishing business. Winner of the Best Picture Oscar in 2022.

Likes: The cast are all fantastic. The sound design is clever and works brilliantly. It's funny throughout as well as a tearjerker in places. It will lift your spirits and give you a warm, fuzzy feeling.

Dislikes: Take away the deaf element and the story is completely predictable.

Rating: 8/10

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande

Synopsis: Retired widow Nancy (played by Emma Thompson) arranges to meet male sex worker Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack) in pursuit of more exciting sexual experiences that she regrets having never explored earlier in life.

Likes: 95% of the film takes place in the hotel room with just these two characters; both of their performances are excellent and the dialogue carrying the story forward is authentic.

Dislikes: It might work better as a theatre production. A little frustrating at times as their encounter progresses ever so slowly, but that's probably the point.

Rating: 6.5/10
